Historic Sign Down

I went on a hunt for an historic marker in Montgomery on Saturday, and found it missing.

This is an online photo of the marker commemorating a scientist, Percy Lavon Julian. It was not in great shape when that photo was taken, and I am told it was laying on the ground not too long ago.

It was gone when I went looking across the street from the Holt Street Baptist Church.

The property where is had been installed is overgrown.

There is a marker for the church itself, and it is intact.
I'll report the missing sign to the appropriate authorities and report back. Perhaps they took the sign in for repairs.

UPDATE:
The Alabama Historic Council handles the sign placement etc, and they checked to see if the city's road crew might have taken it to their shop, but not so. They write:

That marker will need to be added to a growing list to get recreated.  If there is support for doing that, please affirm that, maybe drop me a note and we can alert the Councilor for that area to help fund raise.  A restored marker is $800-$1000.  A wholly new marker is $2700-$3000.

So we'll see.
