The Normandale Mall opened 65 years ago today, in 1955. It was the first shopping center in Alabama and one of the first such retail establishments in the U.S.
The event packed the large parking lots as shoppers visited the Quick Check grocery (later Win Dixie, and later still Mega Meats, now closed.) A two-story Loveman's Department store featured a Santa in the upper window at Christmas.
It has undergone a lot of change since then, and in some recent years has teetered on the edge of failure.
Nonetheless, two investors attended the most recent Neighborhood Association meeting dangling potential improvements that could turn things around.
That's a continuation of possible improvement plans that have been floated periodically now and then.
