The merger has been approved. When will the other shoe fall?

The huge merger of Gannett and New Media newspaper companies is a go, and The Montgomery Advertiser is part of the deal.

The New York Times reported:

"The president of a union that represents newsroom employees around the country (including at The New York Times) condemned the merger. “The deal is bad for journalists, it’s bad for readers, and it’s bad for the future of local journalism,” the News Guild-CWA president, Bernie Lunzer, said in a statement Thursday. “Local papers will likely vanish, jobs will be slashed, and reporting will suffer.”

Both companies voted for the merger, but it will likely become official next Tuesday.

It is interesting that The Montgomery Advertiser reported today's developments without once mentioning that they are part of the merger, or reporting as this website has about the previous layoffs at the paper and the attempted sale of their downtown newsroom.
Admittedly that is a tough story to write, because you are reporting about yourself. What they should do is hire a freelancer from another market, pay him or her in advance, with a pledge to print whatever they have written. And INFORM your readers about it.
