The public is sharply divided along party lines on whether those newspapers should be allowed to fail: 72% of Democrats vs. 22% of Republicans say local newspapers are vital and should be preserved even if they can't sustain themselves financially."
NOTE: Of the 2,100 newspapers that have folded in the past 15 years, most were nondaily or weekly publications serving communities that are significantly poorer and older.
