"What is the oldest piece of clothing that you own and still wear, if only now and then?"
I got thinking about that question after reading a newspaper story about rental clothing...women have done it for years, men are less likely to do so.
I took an advertising class in New York once in which the instructor said people who have money don't have to advertise their wealth by wearing expensive clothing. He said they can wear a $20 pair of jeans with a $500 sports coat and feel just fine.
TV personalities frequently receive a clothing allowance. Once, mine was $3k a year. I spent more money on clothing during those three years than in the previous two decades or more!
I still have some clothes that were bought using that allowance!
I spent half of my broadcasting half-century in radio. Needless to say there was zero clothing allowance.
And I looked like it.
But getting back to my original question. I have ties (oh do I have ties!) that are from the mid 90's. I have a "members only" nylon jacket from the 1980's that my smarter friends won't let me wear. I have a sweater that was my Father's, and he died 25 years ago. I still wear it because of its heritage.
Some of my older clothing was discarded because the pants had apparently shrunk.😎
Truth be told, I am now wearing some clothes from my years (1998-2009) at Alabama Public TV, simply because I lost all of the weight I had put on hosting mornings on CBS 8/ABC 32.
You have no idea how much you eat, and how much weight you can gain, working a 1:00 AM - 11:00 AM shift!
There's an old line about being introduced to a much younger person: "I have underwear older than him".
And it was sometimes true.

"A few (men) said that being outed as a rental customer may be embarrassing. It would be as if they were pretending to have more money than they did."
