For decades Alabama Legislators have tried to reduce or eliminate the state sales tax on food.
It was primarily a Democratic initiative, and it became less and less likely to win approval as the legislature became more and more and more Republican.
Now the Republicans run the show in both houses, and BAM...all of a sudden they're supporting the effort.
So with Republicans in charge, and able to take credit for it, the bill has a chance of passing.

“One thing that gives it some credibility and maybe some legs this year is usually it’s offered by a democratic legislator, who in the minority in the legislature and would have a hard time passing it. In this case, you have one of the most republican and one of the most prominent republicans in the state Senate offering the tax bill,” Political commentator Steve Flowers said.
So with Republicans in charge, and able to take credit for it, the bill has a chance of passing.
