A lot of 2020 events that had been planned P.C. (Pre-Coronavirus) were cancelled, including the grand opening of the third of three Selma-to-Montgomery March Interpretive Centers, the one next to I-85 on the ASU campus.
All three centers are operated by The U.S. National Park Service.
The name on the Montgomery building does not mention ASU. But the connection is virtually unavoidable, since the building is next to the huge ASU football stadium sign.
During the soft opening in February, University officials said the name includes the words "at ASU", although those words are not on the building.
The official U.S. Park Service website simply calls the facility the "Montgomery Interpretive Center".
The center was designed by Chambliss King architects, and their photo of the center is the first thing you see on their website. But the photo is taken in a way to make the giant ASU sign invisible. One other photo on their site shows part of the sign.
Oh, this week? The official Grand Opening was scheduled for Wednesday, the 55th Anniversary of the day the march ended over at the State Capitol.
But Coronavirus managed to infect that plan, closing ASU and just about everything else in Montgomery.
Instead ASU officials held a news conference near the Capitol steps, at the historic sign marking it as the spot where the march ended.
