Perhaps because today is Easter Sunday, I have found myself focusing on what is ahead...on what happens after covid19 is in the rear view mirror, and Montgomery hits the restart button.
I worry that it will be like a car that has been parked in a barn for a decade. Starting it must be done carefully....checking to see if there is sufficient oil and other fluids. Making sure the tires have not dry-rotted from disuse.
So many retail stores and restaurants have been like that car...unused, missing many of the supplies they will need to reopen. Their workers have been laid off...or have left for greener pastures. Will there be enough people to fill the vacancies? Can new staff be trained quickly enough? Will the customers come back after their eat-at-home marathon experience?
Have many teachers given up on their profession because the schools have been closed? And what about the Summer jobs teachers so often take.
How much will not restart, having passed away from atrophy during the long dark Spring of 2020 in the barn with the old car? How many people lost everything because they had invested in a business that suddenly had no customers?
And will the $1,200 checks and added unemployment benefits be enough to restart lives?
