NewSouth Book Publisher Critically Injured

The co-founder and publisher of NewSouth Books in Montgomery is hospitalized, and initially was in critical condition after a terrible accident in which his back was broken a couple of weeks ago.

Fellow NewSouth co-founder Suzanne La Rosa answered my request for information about Randall Williams:

"Randall and a good friend, Joel Sanders, were re-roofing an old commercial building in downtown Montgomery that they own; it's a long-term rehab project. He fell backwards off the roof some fourteen or fifteen feet and landed on his back on the concrete floor. He is in critical but stable condition at Baptist South. He sustained multiple head, rib, and vertebrae fractures, had internal bleeding and bleeding on the brain, and a punctured lung. Things were very grave indeed when he was first admitted to the ER two weeks and a half ago, but we have had good reports about his neurological function off CT scans, and he came through the needed back surgery of last week with flying colors. He has serious respiratory problems right now, which include pneumonia, but he is improving slowly day by day. I am confident about his long-term recovery."

Here's hoping Randall will be like the old sign outside the NewSouth Books offices and the Read Herring Bookstore (formerly a shoe shop)..."made new", and quickly too!
