Five years ago today, then Governor Robert Bentley ordered the flags removed from around the Confederate memorial on the Capitol grounds.
At the time, Bentley was asked by AL.COM if his actions were prompted by the white supremacist shooting deaths of nine African -Americans at a church during bible study the previous week. His answer:
Of course Governor Bentley became former Governor Bentley after some alleged playtime with a female aide, but that aside for a moment. There are no Confederate Flags officially flying at the confederate monument in Montgomery.
Was Bentley ahead of his time?

Dylan Roof, 21, sentenced to death. |
"Yes, partially this is about that. This is the right thing to do. We are facing some major issues in this state regarding the budget and other matters that we need to deal with. This had the potential to become a major distraction as we go forward. I have taxes to raise, we have work to do. And it was my decision that the flag needed to come down."
