UPDATE: Golden Ray

The huge crane that will pick up the sliced pieces of the Golden Ray and deposit them on barges has arrived at the site of the capsized car carrier.
During that operation...expected to take at least two months...most personel will be evacuated from the site because many of the thousands of new but ruined cars on the ship will fall off as the ship cut into eight huge pieces. CBS TV Station WJAX has that story:
“We are all concerned with debris flying off during the cut and the removal of the sections. Each cut is going to result in about 80 to 100 cars falling into the sound, which is what the netting is for the environmental protection barrier, but those cars are full of batteries, antifreeze, oil, gasoline. We are very concerned with every stage of this,” said Altamaha Riverkeeper Executive Director Fletcher Sams.
By the way, the friendly folks at the office coordinating information about the Golden Ray incident have helped me find an answer to the question of what brands and models of vehicles were on the ship when she turned over off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia year ago. At one point I had conflicting informaton indicating there were Hyundai vehicles on board, which made little sense (other than the fact that the ship herself is owned by Hyundai). It turns out the vast majority of them were GM vehicles, apparently produced at GM factories in Mexico. This is a diagram of where the cars were stored on board, identifying them by model. It was released as part of public hearings into the incident. As we know, there were 7,742 vehicles being shipped, now we know almost all of them from GM.
