Langston and I

By Tim Lennox

I dreamed I loved & lived near Langston Hughes,

and offered him a word change.

He thought it over, tried it out aloud,

and silently agreed.

Imagine!

MY word in his work,

on his tongue!

As I awoke:

He lived in Harlem, I in Queens.

He died the day before I turned 17

(not yet learning

even that he existed).

I woke much too late.
