Rep. Teri Sewell released this statement when she was appointed to the conference committee tasked with resolving differences between the House and Senate versions of the $740-Billion Pentagon budget. That could include a provision renaming bases names after confederate figures, including Fr. Rucker in Alabama.
“The House and Senate have historically put politics aside on behalf of the American people to pass the NDAA. This critically important legislation authorizes our national defense priorities for the year and provides our brave men and women with the resources needed to carry out their missions across the world,” Sewell said. “I am committed to continuing this tradition and working to exclude any partisan provisions that threaten the defense and well being of our nation."
I don't know if Sewell includes the base name change aspect of the spending bill...which was given a veto-proof approval by both the House and Senate...as being a "partisan provision", but it would be ironic if the only African-Americn member of Congress from Alabama were to change her vote after a Trump veto and provide cover for him over the issue.
Lame duck Trump has till December 22nd to either sign the bill or veto it. He has threatened a veto, citing his support for keeping the confederate names on Rucker and other bases and other objections.
