Challenges continue in the middle of the decades-old prisoner housing problem in Alabama.
A good part of the battle has been between Counties and the State.
Now the lobbying organization for counties---the Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA) is out with a new report about the overcrowding they are battling because, they say, the State is leaving prisoners in their care too long:
Based on the recent data collected from a December 2020 survey of all 67 counties, the publication's most significant findings reveal:
- County jail operation costs increased by $56 million from 2014 to 2020, which is more than three times the rate of inflation during that time period.
- County sheriff's department operation costs increased by $67 million from 2014 to 2020, more than three times the rate of inflation.
- Combined county jail and sheriff's department operation costs increased by $123 million from 2014 to 2020, more than three times the rate of inflation.
