Hallowed Grounds: Race, Slavery, and the University of Alabama

Presented by Hilary Green

In January 2015, Dr. Hilary Green developed the Hallowed Grounds Project, which explores slavery, memory, and its legacy at the University of Alabama. Her talk will highlight the experiences of several enslaved campus laborers and their role in the development of the University of Alabama and post-emancipation Tuscaloosa community.

Dr. Green is an Associate Professor of History in the Department of Gender and Race Studies at the University of Alabama. For the 2020-2021 academic year, she is the Vann Professor of Ethics in Society at Davidson College. She is the author of Educational Reconstruction: African American Schools in the Urban South, 1864-1890 (Fordham University Press, 2016) as well as articles, book chapters, and other scholarly publications.

This presentation will stream live on ADAH’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. No social media account is required to view. A recording of the lecture will be available on the ADAH’s YouTube channel shortly after the presentation.

Dr. Green's book is available to purchase on the Archives' online museum store, Alabama Original.
