There is ample blame and guilt to go around about Afghanistan. The country's longest war spanned the administrations of two Republican and two Democratic Presidents.
There are also more than a few Alabama connections. In fact the very first combat death was that of 32 year old CIA officer Johnny Michael Spann on November 25, 2001 in Qala-i-Jangi, Balkh Province, Afghanistan.
A memorial to Alabamians who died in the "war on terror" is located in the Alabama Capitol building, in the old state Supreme Court chamber. (Use the Dexter Avenue main doors. After you have gone through security, the memorial is straight ahead, beyond the statue of Governor Lurleen Wallace.)
The first Alabamians to die in the attacks on 9-11 was an Army Sgt from Brewton, Tamarac C. Thurman. She was one of four state residents killed in the attack on the Pentagon that day.
The most recent listing on the memorial is from May 5th of 2020: Specialist H. Mitch Mayfield, Jr. who was based at Ft. Rucker.
More than half a million people are believed to have died during the 20 years of warfare in Afghanistan
