Robert E. Lee Falls Again

"Sept 2 (Reuters) - The Virginia Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Thursday that the state can take down a towering statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, a centerpiece of protests against racial injustice, from its capital city of Richmond."

Meanwhile in the other former capital of the confederacy, the statue of Lee that used to stand in front of the Montgomery Public High School named for him remains in storage. It was torn down in 2020 by protestors, despite the Kay Ivey-approved law protecting it and all confederate statues in Alabama.

That Ruters story also quotes a Virginia official:

"Today it is clear, the largest Confederate monument in the South is coming down."

I beg to differ.

The 21-foot (6.4-meter) bronze statue located on Monument Avenue in the Confederacy's former capital depicts Lee in military attire atop his horse, and sits on a 40-foot (12.2 m) pedestal."

The Confederate monument next to the Alabama capitol building is taller than the 61 foot Virginia. It's 85 feet tall.

And besides, the Montgomery statue of Jefferson Davis was finished almost five years before the one in Richmond was unveiled.

Though these days, arguing about who's confederate monument is bigger if a fool's battle.

The Montgomery School board voted in 2020 to change the name of the school and three others, but has not actually done so. That too is forbidden by the Kay Ivey law.
