The Washington Post has posted a story about objections to establishing things we now cherish, like the Smithsonian Institution. From a 48 page compilation, one of the examples involves an Alabama Congressman who served the 2nd District from March 4, 1877 – March 3, 1893:
In 1892, Alabama Rep. Hilary A. Herbert wanted to “put in the
knife” into funding for the U.S. Geological Survey. Herbert said the
agency wasn’t necessary to “carry on the government” and it didn’t
contribute to “the protection of life or liberty or property.”
Sounds like some of the small-government lovers we continue to elect today!
