As we reported, the Alabama GOP announced another outreach to African American voters on October 19th, and this Thursday morning I'm watching for a second news release explaining how both of Alabama's Republican U.S. Senators voted to block consideration of restoring the Civil Rights Act. (Co-Sponsor Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski was the only Republican to vote in favor.)
(Reminder: Back in 1965, Alabama's OLD Democratic U.S. Senators opposed the original Civil Rights Act. (Those "Dixiecrats" are the political ancestors of the current Alabama Republicans).
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer thanked Murkowski "for working with us in good faith on this bill"... but where is the rest of the party of Lincoln? Down to the last member, the rest of the Republican conference has refused to engage, refused to debate, refused to acknowledge that our country faces a serious threat to democracy."
I'll be waiting for that second ALAGOP news release explaining to the state's African-American voters why they should join the party that voted to oppose restoring the power of the Voting Right's Act.
Still waiting.
(HR4, the U.S. House version of the legislation, is sponsored by the only African-American member of the Alabama U.S. Congressional delegation: Democratic Rep. Terri Sewell.)
