The Montgomery Advertiser---the largest daily newspaper in Alabama---has re-published a weird story from The Tuscaloosa News about the University of Alabama renaming the student center in Tuscaloosa.
The reason the name was changed isn't explained till the very end of the three page, 917 word story:
On Sept. 17 this year, the board approved a resolution to rename the Ferguson, after noting "...(Hill Ferguson)...was a leader on the Board of Trustees when the Board resisted efforts to integrate the University of Alabama and expressed racist views as late as 1963 about the intelligence of African Americans that are inconsistent with the current values of the University of Alabama System...."
In consultation with his descendants, it was agreed the building would be renamed, but that the Ferguson Theater would remain so designated, to honor his contributions.
What? His behavior was so offensive that it prompted the renaming of the building, but not so offensive that they're keeping the theater named after him?
