Decaying Cemetary

The Westcott Cemetery on Terminal Road in Montgomery is one of fifteen listed by the city's official website as being "non-compliant", and it is easy to see why when you walk through it, as I did today.

One grave was open with a skull visible, though a headstone remained.

Reports of the terrible condition of the cemetery date to at least 1968.

A sign warns of restrictions:

Westcott opened as a cemetery for African-Americans two years before Montgomery became a city, in 1817.

A 2019 Montgomery Advertiser story described the poor conditions:

"The grass at the cemetery had recently been cut as fresh clippings were spread across headstones and graves, but food wrappers, bits of cloth and other detritus were strewn around the cemetery and inside some of the open graves."
