Today's State Holiday

State Offices are closed today for the holiday honoring confederate president Jefferson Davis, one of three confederate holidays recognized by Alabama.

Despite the holiday, you can still see the statue of him on your left as you climb the Capitol stairs, and see the star a the top of those stairs marking the spot where he stood to take the oath of office, rejecting the United States.

Alabama ratified the 13th Amendment to the constitution, eliminating slavery, on December 2nd, 1865.

Alabama would remain a "confederate state" for 2702 days, until July 13, 1868, when it was readmitted to the Union.
