Confederate Guns Open Fire

 

Having received authorization from the newly created confederacy in Montgomery, confederate guns opened fire on For Sumter on this date in 1861, the first shots fired in the American Civil War.

Fort Sumter, South Carolina. 1st Shots fired in U.S. Civil War on 4-24-1861 @ 4:30AM.

The Alabama Senate chamber, restored to the way it looked when it opened in 1851. The vote to approve the firing happened here.


 

The men who voted to approve the attack inside the Alabama Capitol Building thought the entire war would be over in a month.

It lasted four years.
