Alabama & The Revoultionary War

Some guests touring the Alabama Capitol on Monday asked me about Alabama's participation in the Revolutionary War. My response was that I did not believe there was any, because Alabama's statehood came long after that war ended. Here's a much more complete answer from an article in The Encyclopedia of Alabama:

"Although Alabama became a state 36 years after the official conclusion of the American Revolutionary War in 1783, there is evidence that more than 1,000 Revolutionary War veterans lived in Alabama for at least a portion of their post-war lives."

Use the map to answer the question. Old map showing - 1

And by the way, there were two Revolutionary War battles actually fought in what we now call Alabama!

"Many people don't realize two Revolutionary War battles were fought in Alabama: one in 1780 and one in 1781. Yep, they occurred in what is now downtown Mobile. Of course, at the time of the battles, the land was not called Alabama. It was in West Florida."

The next time a guest asks that question I'll be better prepared!
