A three-judge panel ruled in 2022 that the current legislative map likely violates the federal Voting Rights Act. It found a map should include two districts in which “Black voters either comprise a voting-age majority” or something close to that.
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld that decision.
Yet, the Republican majority legislature has now approved newly drawn district lines that allow for only ONE black-majority district.
