The writing/directing debut by playright Celine Song has the critics raving, and at least in some theatres, the audience showing up in large numbers. Let's see what happens here.
Past Lives takes place in three distinct periods, starting in South Korea as Na Young must abandon her first crush when her parents relocate to Canada.
Twelve years later, that first crush is doing his mandatory military service. Na Young is now Nora and lives in New York City. Facebook happens.
Twelve years later, Nora is married and that first crush is going to be in New York for a week. So now what?
Says Variety: For all the films that have been made about love triangles, Song has fashioned hers in the form of a circle, defying so many of the clichés in her quietly devastating way. Perhaps it’s because this ultra-personal project is about a feeling other than passion — one that evolves over the years, and which allows one life to contain multiple loves.
