Governor DeSantis, the only persons benefiting from slavery were enslavers, their families and
business associates. Enslaved Black people were even prohibited by law and custom and induced fear
from acquiring the very basic skills of reading and writing. The long legacy of slavery hounds us to this
very day with rampant violence, virulent racism, toxic sexism and inadequate education. We must not
add to these curses in the 21st Century with deliberate lies. Governor DeSantis, slavery did not provide
benefits to enslaved Black people; it robbed them of every benefit.
