A neighbor's children have a cat that lives part-time with me. This is him (below) inspecting presents. Another cat (right), came with the house...a survivor of lots of street scraps, she's called "psycho-kitty" cause she looks like a cat created out of the parts of many others.
PK will sit on the deck after eating and allow birds to eat out of the bowl just three feet away from her. There had to be one very brave bird who did that the first time and then spread the word: there's a cat but just ignore her. Oh, sure!
