Coming Tomorrow!

The first of four parts of "Assault on New York", the story of The CSS Alabama and Raphael Semmes will be posted tomorrow morning. Its a story that has been perhaps better written than read. Even some residents of Alabama, his home state, know little of his exploits during the war. The 200th Anniversary of his birth falls at the end of the month.

A New York City newspaper clipping attached to Raphael Semmes logbook*

referring to him as a "pirate".

Newspaper propaganda like that fueled

Semmes desire to attack Manhattan.

[*NOTE: Semmes logbooks and journals are part of the collection at The Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery.]
