So reports Dave White in The Birmingham News today. He calculates an almost 20% drop in General Fund revenue in the 2013 Fiscal Year that begins in the Fall. That's after three previous years with cuts to that budget, which pays for all non-education spending in the state. Prisons. DHR. Public Safety. Public Health.
All of which will set up a great 2014 Gubernatorial race. What will candidates promise to do about a bankrupt state budget? None will raise revenue, of course, since that's a cardinal political sin in Alabama.
Eliminate state agencies wholesale? Which ones?
Will it prompt a challenge to Governor Bentley in the Republican Primary? Remember he defeated the candidate backed by the Republican Establishment, Bradley Byrne.
And who will run in the Democratic Primary? Anyone?
