Forced Secession?

2009 Selma Reenactment.
Should the U.S. force poor, revenue-negative states-- like Alabama-- out of The Union?
That's the question posed by an article in The Atlantic magazine this morning in an EUesque comparison.

  1. Many years ago, Norman Mailer ran for mayor of NYC on a premise that the city would be best off as an independent nation.

They could collect toll revenue from the bridges and tunnels. Any foreign invaders would first have to enter U.S. airspace or territorial waters and the U.S. military would intercept. So, NYC's defense would be taken care of at no cost to the city.

And, of course, NYC's budget exceeds that of a number of countries.
