Captain Kangaroo

     Captain Kangaroo came up in conversation the other day with this website's editor of many subjects, Jay. He was asking if there was a second host of the CBS show in the 50's and '60's.
     Not that I know of, Jay, though I did recall he was the original Clarabell the clown on The Howdy Dowdy Show before he became the Captain.

     I was lucky enough to interview Bob Keeshan on WERC in Birmingham in the years after the show ended. As nice in person as you might expect.
     He died in January of 2004, just months before the death of the man who replaced him on Howdy Dowdy, Lew Anderson. I remember Lew for saying "goodby kids" on the last Howdy Dowdy show..the only words he had spoken as Clarabell, a silent clown who communicated by blowing horns strung on his belt.
