We Dare Defend Our Pickups

There was a bill introduced in the Alabama legislature in 2003 to make it illegal for children under 12 to ride in the back of a pickup truck.
The Senate Judiciary Committee actually approved it.
You would have thought someone had proposed dragging kids behind the trucks.
Then Republican Senator Curt Lee of Jasper said riding in the back is just part of the way of life in The South and rural areas.
The bill won the "Shroud Award", naming it the deadest bill of the session.

Consider that as you read coverage of a wreck near Guntersville in which a pickup truck tire blew out and the truck turned over multiple times. Two dead and many other injured. One relative of the casualties says there were 14 children under the age of 18 in the truck cab and bed.
