Giving Alabama Public Education some Love

Now we know what job Alabama State Representative Jay Love quit his education budget-writing chairmanship job for.

He's joining forces with one of the most powerful lobbying groups in Montgomery, The Business Council of Alabama, and former Alabama School Superintendent Joe Morton.

They are forming a new "education reform organization" that the BCA's news release says will:

"....provide objective research and support for proven and innovative education programs such as Alabama’s First Class voluntary pre-k program, Reading Initiative, Math-Science-and-Technology Initiative, ACCESS Distance Learning, and 21stcentury workforce training.  In addition, the group will advocate for the implementation of new and needed education reforms, such as public charter schools and expanded school choice options."

Despite a super-majority in the legislature, Love and other Republican lawmakers failed to launch charter schools during the 2012 or 2013 session.
Perhaps the new Business and Education Alliance, The BEA, will do a better job of lobbying the GOP super-majority to approve the "choice" options in 2014.
The group may be able to pound a stake into the remains of Alabama Education Association, the AEA, which fought charter schools because money for them will be deducted from public school funding.

  1. Surprise! Surprise! He's becoming a lobbyist, like the rest!

    Who could have imagined this?
