Saturday Data: Religious Freedom, Or Distortion?

Remember the Hobby Lobby case? The corporation claimed the company's religious beliefs should permit them to refuse to carry contraception coverage for their employees....and the U.S. Supreme Court agreed.
Now another group is arguing they too should be exempt from laws that offend their beliefs. Satanists.

“While religio-conservative views seek to undermine abortion rights, they have also steadily worked to define ‘religious liberty’ to be understood in terms of reserving the the right to deny contraceptives and oppose rational family planning practices. In fact, religious liberty works the other way, too,” Lucien Greaves, the head of The Satanic Temple, said in a statement provided to the Friendly Atheist blog.

The ACLU should agree with the group considering their fact sheet on religious freedom.

The Alabama Legislature is considering HB56, which would
make sure no church or religious organization is forced to conduct gay marriages.
Frankly, I have not heard any pressure on any religious groups to do so. Proponents of same-sex marriage are seeking civil, government recognition of a marriage, and, of course, all of the benefits that come with it. Churches can do as they please.
