It was 1847....the Civil War was years away. A free black man named Samuel Burris helped slaves escape from their confinement. He was put on trial and convicted.
"Part of his sentence was that he be sold into slavery for seven years, but a Pennsylvania anti-slavery society raised money to purchase him and set him free."ABC TV report
Burris continued his slave-liberating action even after his conviction, displaying true conviction.
All of this happened not in Alabama, but in Delaware, a state as divided as the nation over slavery.
Now the Governor in Delaware is going to issue a very belated pardon, according to an AP story at ABC TV News.
How many people in Alabama deserve pardons for their illegal but morally correct actions?
