Equal Rights

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall was in the second or third grade the year the Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1971. Now he battling to prevent the amendment to the U.S. Constitution from being enacted. It reads as follows:

“Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by approximate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

Amending the Constitution is difficult, as it should be. But dontcha think we've had enough time to debate this puppy?

A lobbying group that favors the amendment criticized Marshall and two other Attorneys General who joined him in a lawsuit to block the latest effort:

The Alabama lawsuit is a disgraceful exercise in fear mongering. It relies heavily on a case that was vacated by the Supreme Court and has no force of law.It fails to acknowledge that there is a bipartisan bill pending before Congress to remove the deadline.Alabama has filed this lawsuit to thwart the democratic process, and the will of the overwhelming majority of Americans to enshrine the fundamental right to sex equality in our Constitution. The Attorney General of Alabama has done a disservice to women, including the women of Alabama.

I'm surprised nobody has said the ERA is a "Deep State" plot, though I think the amendment predates that title, and that level of paranoia.

For a state with such a bold motto---we dare defend out rights---we spend a lot of time making sure some Alabama residents don't have theirs.
