I asked the city's official tree-guy whether it was a result of a combination of last year's drought and the recent months' increased rainfall. Russell Stringer's response:
"Last year’s drought is the source. Drought weakens a trees natural resistance to pests and disease. It’s like going to the hospital with the flu and catching pneumonia because your immune system is weakened. The rains we are having are helping to ease things."
If you have lost a tree (or not) there is a free seedling event coming up on Saturday in Montgomery:
Ida Belle Young Park Pavilion off Vaughn Road from 10am-12pm
Bring the family down to get free seedlings, but stick around for games, giveaways and face painting. As in past years, attendees may take home up to 3 new bare root seedlings while supplies last.
Whether you come every year, or have never participated, this is a fun, free and easy way to increase to our community forest canopy.
Tentative tree species available this year: Ann Magnolia, Chestnut Oak, Dogwood, Pecan, Peppermint Crepe Myrtle, Pin Oak, Red Mulberry, Southern Crabapple, and Yoshino Cherry
