A South Carolina Protest over Dr. Marion Sims?

    Just as some Alabamians want to remove the Medical Association of Alabama installed statue of the so-called "Father of Gynecology" from the Alabama Capitol grounds, South Carolina is considering renaming a building named for Sims on a college campus.

They also want to rename a building named for a more modern politician with a racist past: Strom Thurmond. The State newspaper reports:

Two online petitions are calling on the school to rename the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center and Sims at Women’s Quad. Caslen’s statement mentioned only the Sims building.

Thurmond was an ardent supporter of segregation in the 1940s and 1950s, and J. Marion Sims, considered the father of modern gynecology, conducted medical experiments on slaves.
