The Pride Flag Finally Flies

I've lived in Montgomery for 23 years, first with Emory Folmar as Mayor, then Bobby Bright, then Tod Strange, and now Mayor Steven Reed.

Mayors don't run under a party label. The municipal elections are non-partisian.

But everyone knows the political leanings of the candidates. Bright and Reed are both Democrats. The rest are Republicans.

When the current City Hall was built in 1936 the idea of Gay Rights was in the distant future.

Now, for the first time, gay flags flies outside Montgomery City Hall, courtesy Mayor Reed. In Reed's former job as Probate Judge, he offered same-sex marriage licenses the day after the SCOTUS ruling allowing them. (Others in the state refused to issue any licenses, as a protest against the ruling. That includes Wes Allen (R-Pike County), who's currently running for Alabama Secretary of State.

The flags fly in front of City Hall and across the Street, but not, so far as I can tell, in front of other city buildings.
