Rededicating Lincoln Cemetery

I couldn't attend because of a conflict, but there was a re-dedication ceremony at perhaps the oldest black cemetery in Montgomery at Noon today.

It is estimated that there are seven thousand graves, though the facility was planned for just seven hundred! It opened in 1907. Some of the missing graves are thought to be under nearby roads.

Some of the graves are in terrible shape, like this one. The writing on the headstone is illegible, and the grave cover is broken.

Other graves appear to be empty.

But volunteers have made progress over the years in restoring the property.

There are many veterans' graves marked with American flags, from both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam.

During today's re-dedication, the grave of Ben Moore was marked with an historic sign.

You can also see his name on the hotel he opened and operated in Centennial Hill neighborhood.
