The black belt?

This is a quote from a column in today's New York Times, headlined

What if Hale County, Ala., Is the Heart of America?

"....the Black Belt now refers, in most people’s understanding, to the racial makeup of the area’s population."

It's an interesting column, comparing the 1940's work by William Christenberry with the more recent focus on Hale County by RaMell Ross.

But I must wonder aloud about the reference above. "in most people's understanding? Says who? I'm a much more recent Alabama transplant, but I've always referred to the color of the soil, not the skin of it's people.

Than again, the author, Margaret Renkl, is published in The Times, while I'm mostly just (self) published here.

In Alabama.
