The National Trust for Historic Preservation

is working to preserve the African-American community known as Africatown in South Alabama.

Learn more about the community established by some of the last Africans sent to Alabama as slaves HERE.

 

 Cudjo Lewis at his home in African Town (now Africatown), in the late 1920s. Lewis was the last survivor of the group of enslaved Africans brought illegally to the Mobile area on the Clotilda, the last ship to bring captives to the United States.
