Visit Reynolds This Summer

One of Birmingham's hidden treasures is the Reynolds Historical Library on the UAB Campus.
While little children might be put off by some of the more graphic displays (circa 1850 models of various human physical deformities, for example), it's worth a trip for adults and older kids to see what's on display...like an iron lung and thousands of books dating  to the 1400's.

There's a current exhibit about fairy tales and  how they relate to medical history books in the collection too.
If you have a budding doctor or nurse in your brood, make a point to stop by. As with a lot of that part of the city, parking is problematic, but locate a deck and make a short hike. (See below for parking deck locations)
I first came across the library for a piece I did about a civil war diary they obtained. The pics with this posting show the display of a doctor's medical chest from that war, a chest taken to the front to treat wounded soldiers. Civil War Medicine is one of the library's specialties.
Remember, the fact that germs caused illness was brand new when the war started, and doctors would operate using the same bloody instruments from one soldier to the next. There were more deaths from disease than actual wounds in the war,
